The secret to getting away with murder is staying calm. He watched, not so much as a speedy blink giving away that he was about to take a life.

The store was slow. He’d taken a car from the lot before he left work, avoiding the new cameras that had just been installed, and parked at the donut shop across from the gas station, watching people come and go.

He didn’t need to worry about cameras out here—in a neighborhood that used to be nice but was sliding toward gangs and drugs faster every year, the brown-and-orange QuickWay sign had two lights out, but it wasn’t cracked.

Just after eleven, ten minutes went by with nobody else in the store.

He crossed the street, pausing when two skinny teenage boys strolled up and went in looking hopeful. Some shouting ensued, and the boys came out hanging their heads and bitching about the old broad behind the counter not selling them beer.

They didn’t notice the guy slumped against the newspaper rack with his hat pulled low over his face. They just left in the same direction they came from.

People, as a general rule, are way more wrapped up in themselves than anyone realizes.

He walked into the shop, pulled out the gun, and shot the clerk twice in the head just as her eyes widened with recognition.

“Blackmail is a dangerous game, bitch,” he muttered, turning quickly back for the door, keeping the hat low over his eyes.

A truck had parked out front, and a pair of cowboys in mud-covered boots, plaid shirts, and black Stetsons chatted about the new Stallone movie as they walked in. The tall one hit his arm with the door as he tried to walk out and pocket the pistol at the same time, and it flew out of his hand, skittering under a shelf.

“Hey, buddy, you dropped some—”

“Rick! This lady’s been shot—grab that sonofabitch!” his buddy called.

But he was faster than Rick, and police response times in that part of the city were abysmal. By the time the sirens approached, the stolen car was back where it belonged, his clothes were in his trunk, and he was on his way home.
